🚗 I Drove to Galveston (So You Don't Have To Guess) + Summer 2026 Sneak Peek!

Hey my fellow Cruisers!!

I recently took a road trip down to Galveston to check out the port scene firsthand. I drove down from San Antonio with a quick pit stop in Houston to see family. Once you clear the Houston traffic, the drive down I-45 is actually pretty easy and scenic as you hit the coast.

I decided to head down a day early (Rule #1 of cruising: always go a day early!) and stayed at a really nice convention hotel right on the Seawall. I booked a room with a partial ocean view, and honestly, waking up to that Gulf breeze was the perfect start to the vacation mode.

Since our boarding time wasn't until later the next day, I had time to walk along the beach down toward the boardwalk and just take in the vibe.

☕ Hidden Gem Alert:

On my morning walk, I stumbled upon an amazing breakfast spot called ShyKatz . The bagels were delish (seriously, New York level), but what touched me most was the owners. Their son is an active Marine, and they have a table permanently set and dedicated to him. As a veteran myself, that hit home. If you go, definitely stop by and support them.

🚢 Port Logistics (The Real Deal):

* Parking: It was a little confusing finding the right lot at first—there are several private lots and the official Port lots. Once I found mine, they had a shuttle waiting immediately.

Pro Tip: Most lots are uncovered, so put your sunshades up in your windshield before you leave your car! They also have veteran discounts too!

* Shuttles: If you don't want to park at the port, many hotels offer shuttles for a small fee.

* Coming from Houston: If you are flying into HOU or IAH, the cruise lines offer transfers, but heads up: the drive can be 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and waiting for the bus to fill. Plan accordingly!

The "New" Galveston

Check-in was easy as pie—smooth, efficient, and very similar to what I’ve seen in Florida ports. But what I really love is the growth. Galveston has leveled up in a major way to accommodate the massive new ships sailing this summer.

Speaking of summer, here is what is sailing from June to September 2026 and why you should care:

The Summer 2026 Lineup

🌊 Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas

* The Vibe: This is an Oasis-class ship (aka: HUGE). It’s a destination in itself with neighborhoods, slides, and endless entertainment.

* Best For: Families who want the "floating city" experience without flying to Florida.

🎉 Carnival Jubilee

* The Vibe: The newest ship in the fleet and built specifically for Texas fun. It’s big, loud, and proud.

* Best For: Groups and families looking for high energy and the ultimate fun ship experience.

✨ MSC Seascape

* The Vibe: The new player in town! Modern European design, Swarovski crystal staircases, and a "Yacht Club" (ship-within-a-ship) that is pure luxury.

* Best For: Couples and luxury seekers who want something different and upscale.

Why You Should Sail Out of Galveston

📍 If you live in the "Texas Triangle" (Houston, Dallas, Austin):

This is the ultimate "Zero Friction Vacation." You can load up your car (no baggage weight limits!) and go from your driveway to a cocktail on the Lido deck in a few hours. No TSA lines, no flight delays. Just an easy drive and instant relaxation.

📍 If you live in San Diego:

I know you have the ocean, but let's be honest—the Pacific is cold and dark. You want that teal, warm Caribbean water.

* The Hack: Flights from San Diego to Houston (Hobby Airport) are often direct and affordable. You can get to the real Caribbean beaches (Cozumel, Roatan) faster and cheaper through Galveston than flying all the way to Miami. Plus, you get Texas BBQ before you board. Win-win.

Getting Off the Ship (Debarkation)

Getting off was seamless, but I have two final tips for you:

* Mark Your Bag: There are thousands of black and tan suitcases. Put a bright ribbon, a unique tag, or a strap on yours so you can spot it instantly in the terminal.

* The Texas Alcohol Tax: One unique thing about Galveston is that TABC collects tax on alcohol you bring back. It’s usually just a few dollars per bottle. The upside? Since you are driving, you don't have to worry about bottles breaking in checked airline luggage or making your bag overweight!
